Krugerrands are the official gold bullion coin of South Africa. Following its introduction in 1967, this coin has become one of the most popular and well-known gold bullion coins on the planet. In case you are contemplating an investment in gold, there are numerous excellent reasons to look at these coins first. You are probably asking yourself what makes the Krugerrand unique and special. There are a lot of great reasons to invest in these coins, and I will go over a number of them here.
The 1 oz. Krugerrand was already truly distinctive when it was introduced in 1967. It was the very first gold coin to trade based solely on the amount of gold it contained, and not the face value of the coin (the value stamped on the front of the coin). In fact, it was one of the initial sovereign coins to have no face value stamped on the front of the coin. Moreover, it was the first gold bullion coin to feature exactly one troy ounce of gold. The precise total weight of the coin is 1.0909 grams, with the remainder consisting of a copper alloy which makes the coin tougher.
This copper alloy also makes the Krugerrand more unique. A lot of the other sovereign coins are made using a copper and silver combination, giving them a shinier appearance. The South African coin, however, has a darker hue and a reddish appearance. In fact, some think it resembles a penny, but this coin is undoubtedly composed of gold. Because of this copper alloy, it has one of the more unique appearances among the sovereign bullion coins available in the world.
Something else that makes the this bullion coin interesting would be the circumstances that led to its invention. President Franklin D. Roosevelt authorized an executive order in 1933 that made owning more than a small amount of gold illegal for American citizens. Krugerrands were unveiled over 30 years later to go around this US law as a result of a loophole that allowed US citizens to hold on to their foreign gold coins accepted as legal tender. The South African coins became very popular, which resulted in their dominance of the international gold market by 1980. As a matter of fact, these South African coins led the way for sovereign gold coins from many other countries, including the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf and the American Gold Eagle.
Krugerrands are certainly one of the most one-of-a-kind sovereign gold bullion coins available today, for all of the reasons we have just seen. They’d make a fantastic addition to any portfolio. If you are thinking of making an investment in gold coins, now is the time!
